The Laws of Kodiak
Kodiak City and its surroundings are under loose control of the Free American Army, which is a lot more libertarian in its ideals of the American legal system. The Rangers are tasked with enforcing the law in the city and primarily come calling on for serious crimes.
Primary Legal Code
1. Murder - Is a crime often punished by death.
2. Espionage - Giving away FAA secrets to the Feds or MegaCorps is a serious crime, often ends up with interrogation and being thrown in prison.
3. Grand Theft - Stealing Costly items, vehicles, etc. is worth spending some time in Kodiak's Prison, unless you can replace it.
4. Kidnapping - Stealing people, that's also a crime, if you're lucky you end up in prison.
5. Hacking - Hacking a Network or individual's private computer is a crime. This one is getting harder to prosecute but usually holds prison time if caught.
6. Dream Intrusion - A new law, but entering someone's dreams without their permission is a crime. A hard one to prosecute, no one has been caught yet...
7. Forgery - Forging official documents, using fake IDs and similar is considered a crime. Since many of the FAA are also guilty of this, it sometimes is ignored with the right connections.
8. Bio "Tampering" - Modifying someone's DNA against their will, whether through designer viruses or BioTech, is a serious infringement in the eyes of most Rangers and decent folk. You can end up in Prison for awhile on that one.
9. Interfering with a Ranger - Whether its physical violence or some other means of obstruction, getting in the way of a Ranger doing their duty is a crime, except a beating or a visit to the brig. This can even happen to individual FAA who might be causing trouble.
10. Smuggling - Smuggling dangerous or experimental tech into the city (if its not going to the FAA) could be considered a crime. The technicalities of this are often mitigated with individual Ranger's judgement. Medicine might be ignored, whereas explosives being sold to street gangs might result in being tossed in Prison.
Legal Protections
Accused are allowed a trial and a lawyer if it comes to that. If it can be settled out of court to the satisfaction of a Ranger's judgement, that was your trial. Problem with a Ranger? Petition the FAA command about the problem - if you can find them...
What's Surprisingly Legal
1. Drugs - Drugs aren't really illegal, although organized crime factions may want to control production. A Ranger might warn you to stay off the Krok, but they aren't going to put you in jail for it.
2. Copyright Violations - Often enforced only by contractors hired by MegaCorps, on the streets no-one gives a shit who owns the rights to something - if you can download it, its yours.
3. Noise Pollution - Rangers might mitigate a dispute between neighbors, but party when you can in the Alaskan wild.
4. Automatic Weapons & Heavy Guns - There are a lot of weaponry that might be illegal if this weren't Alaska, where bears and U.S. Federal troops might be a threat. The average Ranger can't do much if you're just carrying around an automatic rifle.
5. Self Defense - Someone try to hurt you? Did you shoot them down? That's within your rights.
